"You are so busy being you that you have no idea how utterly unprecedented you are." -The Fault in Our Stars

My Capstone pieces! I’m so happy to have finished this series, and I love how they turned out!

Series: “The Road Less Traveled”

Sculpture bust in progress. Loosely based on my roommate Amanda. I like how it’s turning out so far!

My last ceramics project of the semester! Square low fire mugs with primary colors. So fun! I’m so glad they came out!

Experimenting with different ways of creating QR codes… Note to self: this one doesn’t work.

I think my experimenting with QR codes has given me a fascination for squares / sharp angles. This fascination is beginning to show through in my ceramic works as well. The picture on the left is a pentagonal vase that has some burnished (very shiny) sides, and some rough sides. I want to see how I can manipulate textures in my pit fired pieces, so I hope this one turns out well! The picture on the right is a four sided mug, the first of three identical mugs. It’s still functional, but it’s definitely a little quirky! I’m really excited about these.

The results of my “Home” project. The first picture is a two-sided print. One side has the various answers I collected to the question “What is your definition of home?” The other side has the dictionary definition conveyed through a QR code. The next picture is of the accompanying t-shirt I created for our class’s t-shirt exchange.

The results of my experimental screen printing earlier this semester.

Mix of traditional screen printing, printing with bleach, bleach splatters, and hand dyed paper.

The codes were printed in white before dying the paper, which created codes that cannot be scanned (they would pull up the lyrics to “Ghost” by Ingrid Michaelson). I wanted the information to seem so easily available, but just out of reach so that the viewer could experience and identify with some of the frustration expressed in the song.

I’m considering using this photograph of mine to create a companion piece to “The Road Less Traveled”. Still brainstorming quotes for the QR code, though.

I created this piece, titled “Hello, my name is…” in Fall 2009 for a serigraphy project. I’m using this piece as an inspiration for a piece that I just started. I’m sculpting a portrait bust (using my roommate as a model) and carving QR codes into the surface that say things like “past”, “weight”, and “job” to revisit the idea of labels that we allow to become a part of ourselves. My goal is to have this piece done in time for the capstone show, but it definitely has a long way to go!

Transparencies for my “Home” print.

The one on the left, when scanned, pulls up the dictionary definition of “Home”. It will be printed on vellum and overlaid on top of the print.

The one on the right consists of the various answers people had to the question “What is your definition of ‘home’?” It will be printed several times to create a busy visual texture. By doing this, the different definitions all meld together to form a cohesive texture to acknowledge that even though our definitions are different, the underlying idea is the same. The idea of home is something that can give us a common ground, because we all have something, somewhere, or someone that we consider our home.

Excited to share the final product soon!
